Born 1743. Worked at Mirecourt. Points frequently assailable in Mirecourt work are here covered with artistic defences. Kept his eye fixed upon modified Stradivarian principles (broader proportions and arching slightly more elevated) with all the undeviating intentness of his race whilst every part of a well laid out plan is brought to assist and enhance the whole contour. Often very pretty wood, rich brown or orange varnish. Tonal quality inclines towards mellowness, while its fullness is never questioned.
Son of Joseph Mathieu, Nicolas is supposed to have served his apprenticeship in Mirecourt with his father and registered as master violin maker in 1775.
His works bear influences from Nicolas Chappuy.
Stamped “Nicolas Mathieu” to the outside back.
