Mario Maccaferri (1900–1993) was an Italian luthier, musician, and inventor best known for designing the Selmer-Maccaferri guitar, famously used by Django Reinhardt. Born in Cento, Italy, he trained as a classical guitarist and studied luthiery under Luigi Mozzani. In the 1930s, he collaborated with Selmer in France to create innovative guitars, including models with a unique internal resonator. After moving to the United States in 1939, he shifted focus to plastic manufacturing, inventing plastic ukuleles, reeds, and even plastic guitars. His pioneering work in both traditional and synthetic materials left a lasting impact on the music industry.
